Gilleleje, Denmark: Beach, Shopping & Food Paradise

Gilleleje is arguably among the most wonderful and picturesque beach towns in all of Denmark. Located on the northern tip of Zealand, just an hour or so by car from Copenhagen, it is accessible and easy to get to and definitely worth a visit when you’re Denmark, especially in the warmer months when it’s possible to truly enjoy the outdoor activities, the beach and al fresco dining in the many wonderful cafes and restaurants.

Everything is just a stroll away

The beach is just moment’s stroll away from the harbour and the harbour only a minute or so by foot away from the town centre. The beach is long and wide, the water wonderfully cool on a warm day and perfect for families with kids, friends looking for a great place to hang with a picnic or couples and singles looking for a place to read, chat or take in the sun in solitude.

A Foodie’s Heaven

The harbour is home to the many fishing boats and sail boats, something you can enjoy looking at even if you don’t come to Gilleleje by sea. On the harbour you can buy fish, there’s a crab race-track and a large green that’s perfect for a picnic lunch, a stroll or a game of rounders. There are 8-10 fantastic restaurants on the harbour in Gilleleje, some are smaller cafes, some are larger restaurants, but the common denominator has to be super menus full of the freshest quality produce and the locally sourced fish. Foodies are in Foodie Heaven in any of the eateries on Gilleleje Harbour.

The town centre is a wonderful High Street with a great mix of independent shops and bigger chain stores, with slightly more independents, actually, all of which offer interesting and exciting products you don’t find all over. For the hungry there are restaurants, cafes, traditional Danish hot dog stands and ice cream shops (don’t miss ISEN where they make their own cones IN THE WINDOW).
